2017 Art & Analysis
Cinematographer, Editor What is hidden beneath the
surface of paintings? Focusing on two 17th century artists, Adrian Vanson and
Adam de Colone, the exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery
presents the findings of a recent collaborative research project. Art &
Analysis brings together a group of paintings that conservator Dr Caroline
Rae, Caroline Villers Research Fellow at the Courtauld Institute of Art, has
been examining using cutting edge technology. The exhibition is on until 26 January, 2020.
In this film, paintings
conservator Lesley Stevenson and curator Kate Anderson discuss how technical
analysis can help inform our understanding of artworks, and Dr Caroline Rae
presents some key findings from her research: including a woman (believed to be
Mary Queen of Scots) hidden underneath a painting by Adrian Vanson.
