2025Freedom to MoveDirector of Photography
Directed by Cecilia Stenbom, Freedom to Move intimately chronicles the daily rituals, training regimes, and social life of Rainbow Mbuangi, a talented athlete who plays for Merseyside Blind Football Club.

Freedom to Move offers an intimate observation of Rainbow Mbuangi, a key player for Merseyside Blind Football Club. The film embeds itself within Mbuangi’s daily life, documenting the structured routines, intensive training, and social world that orbit his athletic pursuits. Through a rigorous focus on sound—both the necessities of his off-field navigational aids and the specialized, rattling ‘soundball’ used in the game—the documentary explores the complex relationship between dependence and autonomy. On the pitch, where he is fully reliant on auditory cues, Mbuangi challenges conventional notions of athletic space and visual interpretation.

The intention behind Freedom to Move was to create a film that doesn’t rely on exposition but rather immerses the audience in Rainbow’s daily reality – both on and off the field. We want viewers to feel the rhythm of his routines and the nuances of his interactions, offering a visceral understanding of his life. To do so, we have blended observational filming with re-enactment. This meant capturing Rainbow and his close friends in their environment, while also staging certain moments to convey key aspects of Rainbow’s life.

In addition, we’re focusing on enhancing the auditory experience of Rainbow, leveraging sound design to immerse viewers in his world through sonic motifs centred around the sound ball, the sped-up audio phone cues and rattling of the walking cane. To simulate Rainbow’s visual impairment, the film starts with 11 seconds of black screen allowing the soundscape to lead the audience into Rainbow’s world.Text from Cecilia Stenbom’s website

Bazooka Arts and Glasgow Print Studio work with shared values, that the arts should be truly accessible for everyone and firmly believe in the multiple health, personal and social benefits that can be experienced through arts participation.

Brave Spaces was delivered through a combination of outreach and immersive workshops, supporting participants to expand personal and creative comfort zones while exploring new printmaking techniques, environments and opportunities.

The group selected archive screenprints featuring a range of techniques, styles and approaches which connected thematically, and inspired the development of their own artworks.

The project provided valuable respite relief for many of the participants, most of whom have unpaid caring roles or live with challenges relating to long term health conditions.

The project itself was a Brave Space, a place to safely explore and push the boundaries of personal and creative comfort zones, develop confidence and explore new artistic possibilities.

2023Repeat Patterns
Cinematographer, Editor Production of a conversational film with Glasgow-based artists Helen de Main and
Mandy McIntosh for inclusion in their new exhibition of works on paper, fabric,
and sculpture, commissioned by GoMA.

The work exhibited in Repeat Patterns emerges from
research and conversations about feminism and social reproduction – how
inequalities persist through generations – addressed through radical
printmaking practices.

Helen de Main and Mandy McIntosh are both artists who employ
group work as a pivotal part of their practice. Their approaches are rooted in
multi-directional models of cooperative learning, capacity building and
creativity, with a desire to create change in imagination and conditions.
Informed by these ways of working, their research for Repeat Patterns examines
class, housing, planning, displacement, care and the demand for equality.

With print as a starting point for making, Repeat Patterns
has developed to include works on paper, fabric, and sculpture. It also references the
second-wave feminist argument that ‘the personal is the political’, which
asserts experiences in women’s personal lives are directly linked to the social
and political conditions within society.

Repeat Patterns contributes to
current conversations about the core pillars of the welfare state provisions in
housing, care, work, and public spaces.
Repeat Patterns has been supported by the National Lottery
through Creative Scotland.Image:Left - Helen de Main - We Want the Moon (detail), 2023 courtesy and © Helen de Main
